Differences in Body Composition between Playing Positions in Men’s Professional Soccer: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

The performance of male soccer players (MSPs) depends on multiple factors, such as body composition. It is understandable to think that, due the physical demands and specific functions during play, composition may vary depending playing position. aim this systematic review meta-analysis was describe anthropometric, BC, somatotype characteristics professional MSPs compare reported values according We systematically searched Embase, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web Science following PRISMA statement. Random-effects meta-analysis, a pooled summary means, 95% CI (method or equation) were calculated. Random models used with Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) method. Twenty-six articles included in meta-analysis. After comparing groups position (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward), significant differences found age, height, weight, sum skinfolds, kilograms muscle mass, fat-free mass (p = 0.001; p < 0.0001). No observed fat percentage bone somatotype. Despite limitations, study provides useful information help medical–technical staff properly assess BC MSPs, providing reference for different positions.
